What are IoT-based Smart Homes?
IoT-based Smart Home, commonly known as “Smart Home” or “Connected Home” is a connected home which provides a fully connected household environment, giving residents unparalleled levels of comfort and convenience. A smart home is made up of various components that are connected to each other - smart AC, smart washing machines, smart TVs, smart refrigerator, etc. to name a few. They are “smart” because they are connected to each other via the cloud. In a nutshell, various components of your smart home can be controlled simply from an app on your smartphone. Brands like Panasonic have rolled out smart home solutions, where various components are connected via their Miraie App. Let’s take a deeper look at the individual components of a smart home. In this article we will explore smart switches, smart ACs and smart refrigerators.
Smart
Switches
Imagine
heading out of your house and you realise that you forgot to turn off a
particular light or appliance switch. You’re constantly plagued by worrisome
thoughts about hefty electricity bills or simply your appliance breaking down. Smart Switches take this worry off your head because now you can simply turn off the
switch from your mobile phone. A smart switch connects via your home network,
enabling you to remotely control the switch and switching it on or off when you
like. Having smart switches does not mean you cannot manually operate them. You
can connect to a smart switch via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or the Zigbee or Z-Wave
networks. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections are pretty simple. You configure the smart switches to your home network and
can access them through Wi-Fi, through an app on your phone. A good example for
this would be Panasonic’s Miraie platform, where you can access all the supported
gadgets in one place.
Zigbee and Z-Waves are used for houses with a larger footprint, maybe spanning
over several floors and with several devices to be connected.
Smart
AC
Smart
AC or voice-enabled
AC is another essential aspect of a connected or smart home. As the
name suggests, these air conditioners can be operated using voice commands and
are generally compatible with popular voice assistants like Alexa and Google
Assistant. So, you can simply say, “Hey Alexa, switch on my AC.” and your voice-enabled AC will respond by
switching on. You can even set usage patterns based on your sleep cycle and the
AC will switch on automatically, based on the set schedule. You can even
control and switch off your voice-enabled
AC from afar, in case you forgot to switch it off when you left the house.
A lot of leading manufactures like LG, Panasonic, Samsung, have launched smart
ACs in the market, which you can buy at your nearest retailer or through any
leading online shopping portal.

Refrigerators
The future looks promising, convenient and much more comfortable with IoT-based smart homes. Are you excited for the potential this technology holds?
