Why do double door refrigerators not have a light in the freezer?
The fascination of opening the refrigerator and automatically seeing the flick of the light getting on was magical to us as children. However, now we see that the double door refrigerators do not have the flick that we once used to find so alluring. This brings us to the main question!
Why was this changed in the double door refrigerator? Well, there are numerous reasons for it. We're living in an era where technological innovations are taking place for the comfort and convenience of the society. After much reading and figuring out what could be the possible reasons, we have found the reasons why there is no flick in the double door fridge. The most prominent reason is that the freezer is not opened as much as the other compartments. Therefore, manufacturers don’t see much of a point to add the light in the double door freezer variant.
A renowned economist at Cornell University stated that installing an automatic light in a freezer involves the same cost as the cost to put one in a fridge; that amount does not change, regardless of how many times you open the door and turn on the light. The benefit of that light is to ease your search for food even when it is placed on the farthest corner of the refrigerator. However, since people tend to open their refrigerators more than their freezers, the cost of adding a freezer light outweighs the benefits.
Furthermore, the freezer compartment would need expensive LED bulbs since the temperature inside is below -15 °C, and normal bulbs cannot be used. Now LEDs have a temperature constraint, making them the only option to use in the freezer compartment, and that in itself is an added cost for the manufacturer.
There is another reason why it is presumed that the freezer does not have a light, and that is to keep the heat out. The led light would lead to heat transfer, warming up the double door refrigerator’s freezer compartment.
Furthermore, a problem that non-automatic defrosting freezers may face, particularly with older models, is that the ice crystal builds from the humidity of the air introduced when opening the freezer. It not only reduces the efficiency of the freezer in the double door fridge itself but also the utility of the light, making it a pointless thing to have.
Some brands do, however, have freezers in their double door refrigerators, like Panasonic, Samsung, in case you were wondering. They come with this additional feature and at a decent price compared to the market rate. Maybe, the cost of the extra light is the main reason double door refrigerators do not have lights and well, the freezer being opened at the least also plays a big part in this.
